The Side Quest
Every developer has side projects — mine just happens to have an EIN and a registered agent. Schmidt Limited Company started because I wanted to know what it actually takes to start a business. Not from a textbook, but hands-on.
I filed the LLC paperwork myself, navigated the state registration process, and figured out how it all fits together — purely for the love of learning. No investors, no pressure, just me, some government websites, and a lot of coffee.
Getting Legit
Standing up an LLC is one of those things that sounds intimidating until you actually do it — then it's just a series of forms and fees. Here's what I did to get Schmidt Limited Company off the ground:
LLC Registration
Filed the Articles of Organization with the state, chose a registered agent, and got the official paperwork back in the mail. Framed it? Almost.
IRS Registration
Applied for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) through the IRS — free, online, and surprisingly fast. The company now has its very own tax identity.
Financial Accounts
Opened dedicated business checking and savings accounts to keep company finances separate and clean. Adulting, but make it entrepreneurial.
Chapter 1: Real Estate
The company's first real operation? Running a rental property. I handled everything end-to-end — writing the listings, taking photos, fielding inquiries, scheduling showings, and drafting the rental contracts.
Every maintenance request, lease renewal, and move-out inspection went through Schmidt Limited Company. A full crash course in property management, tenant relations, and the glorious world of scheduling plumbers.
What's Next
The whole point is to keep exploring. Schmidt Limited Company is my sandbox for whatever catches my attention next — no pressure, no deadlines, just genuine curiosity. Here's what's on the horizon:
